Lagos Hacks I’ve Learned So Far
the realistic shortcuts that have saved my sanity
Hi friend,
Where has the week gone? It is already Friday, so let us keep today’s update on the lighter side as we head into the weekend. I have been keeping notes on the little adjustments that make daily life in Lagos feel smoother. Not perfect, just manageable. If you have lived here longer than me, feel free to laugh because you probably mastered these tricks ages ago.
Here is what I have learned so far.
Leave earlier than you think
If the map says thirty minutes, double it. Lagos traffic likes to surprise people.
Never trust the map for timing
Ask someone who actually stays in that area for the real estimate. The map is too optimistic.
Order your groceries online
During the first couple of months here, Mr. O and I went to the market each week for fresh produce. It took an entire day, and the washing afterward made it even longer. After a while it got old and we desperately needed a new system. Shopping malls did not have everything we needed and the produce was not fresh for the price. That is when Pricepally came into play. Ordering fresh groceries that arrive clean, unbruised, and on time has been the best thing for both me and our schedule.
Know where to bargain
Markets are flexible. Supermarkets are not. Once I figured that out, my confidence grew and I started exploring the bigger markets for fabrics and materials for new clothes.
Prepare for the heat
Do your cleaning and any heavy lifting early in the morning. Bring a small fan to weddings and events. Hydration is part of survival.
Learn a little Pidgin.
Even a few phrases go a long way. People appreciate the effort. “Oya now” and “How fa” (how are you or what is up) have helped me keep my team and my work moving.
Lagos is loud, unpredictable, and full of personality. The moment you stop fighting the pace, it becomes easier to enjoy the rhythm of the city.
You are not alone if you are still adjusting. I am learning one day at a time too 🫶🏾
See you on Tuesday,
From your Americanish girl surviving Lagos 🇳🇬💌
